The Scripps Howard Fund, a public charity established by The E.W. Scripps Company, is dedicated to creating informed and engaged communities through journalism education, childhood literacy and local causes. At the crossroads of the classroom and the newsroom, the Fund is a leader in supporting journalism through award-winning journalism education programs; scholarships, internships and fellowships; funding to advance diversity and inclusion; and support of First Amendment causes. The Scripps Howard Awards stand as one of the industry’s top honors for outstanding journalism. The Fund’s annual “If You Give a Child a Book …” childhood literacy campaign has distributed thousands of new books to children in need across the nation. The Fund improves lives and helps build thriving communities by partnering with Scripps brands to create awareness of local issues and support impactful organizations to drive solutions. The Fund also administers funding from the Scripps Howard Foundation, a private foundation founded in 1962 to advance charitable causes important to The E.W. Scripps Company and the Scripps and Howard families.

The work of the Scripps Howard Fund is possible thanks to the generosity of donors across the country, the Scripps and Howard families, The E.W. Scripps Company, Scripps employees and retirees, and many others.

Our Story

Giving light. Changing lives. for more than 60 years the Scripps Howard Fund has supported a free press and has had a direct, positive impact in communities where The E.W. Scripps Company has a presence.

“We Do Well By Doing Good”

This was a common statement from Charles E. Scripps, one of the founders of the Scripps Howard Fund and long-time board chairman of The E.W. Scripps Company. Whether it was company or Fund business, his point was simple. When we enrich the lives of others, our own lives are enriched.
