Recognition and support

Everyone needs encouragement and at the Scripps Howard Foundation we especially like to reward and incentivize the journalists who use the power of the pen, keyboard and smartphone to fairly cover topics of relevance for local and national audiences. At the Scripps Howard Foundation, we support democracy and advance the cause of a free press by encouraging journalistic excellence, and providing educational and career development opportunities for journalists.

Environmental Fellows

The Ted Scripps Fellowships in Environmental Journalism offer $50,000 stipends to five print or broadcast professionals for nine months of study at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Apply by March 1; fellowships begin in mid-August.

Academic Leadership Academy

The Foundation partners with Louisiana State University to offer an expenses-paid Academic Leadership Academy to prepare educators and professionals for journalism and communication school administration. Apply by Dec. 31 for the academy in June.

Widely regarded as one of the nation’s most prestigious journalism competitions, the awards offer $180,000 in prize money in 17 categories. We will announce the winners on Twitter on March 7. The 2017 Scripps Howard Awards event is April 12 in Cincinnati.

Leadership Institute

Edward W. (Ted) Scripps II, grandson to E.W. Scripps, was a visionary leader for the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). The Ted Scripps Leadership Institute, founded in 1996, prepares members for the organization’s local, regional and national leadership positions.
