Scripps Howard Foundation announces the winners of its annual Scripps Howard Awards, honoring the best work in the communications industry and journalism education in 2012. Winners will receive a total of $175,000 and distinctive trophies at an awards dinner on May 9 at the Waldorf Astoria in Naples, Fla., home of the Naples Daily News, a Scripps publication.

The Scripps College of Communication at Ohio University was named a Center of Excellence in Culture and Societal Transformation for the state of Ohio and is the only college of communication to receive such a designation. The Foundation's Semester in Washington program is an internship program for college journalism students who write for the Scripps Howard Foundation Wire. In addition to a strong focus on reporting and writing national news and features, the program includes visits to the Capitol, the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, the Student Press Law Center and other journalism and government institutions.
