Nine Win Scripps Howard Foundation Collegiate Reporting Prize Trip to Japan and South Korea
CINCINNATI – The Scripps
Howard Foundation today awarded a 13-day journalism study trip to
The competition, established in 1984 in cooperation with the Indiana University School of Journalism, honors the memory of the journalist who led Scripps Howard Newspapers from 1922-1953 and United Press International from 1912-1920.
Judith G. Clabes, president and CEO of the Scripps Howard Foundation, said the prize responds to the need for today’s student journalists to better understand international affairs.

The nine winners were chosen for the quality of their published work and an essay about their interst in international affairs. They are:
Whitney Boyd, junior journalism major at Hampton University in Hampton, Va., who has interned at The Commercial Appeal in Memphis. She will participate this summer in The New York Times Student Journalism Institute and work at Scripps Howard News Service in Washington, D.C. She is from Snellville, Ga.
Kenneth Cummings, junior speech communications and theater major at Tennessee State in Nashville, where he is visuals editor and a photographer for the university’s student newspaper. He has worked as a photography intern at The Commercial Appeal in Memphis, his hometown.
Drew Harwell, sophomore journalism and history major at the University of Florida in Gainesville. He has worked as a reporter for several Florida newspapers, including his hometown daily, the St. Petersburg Times.
Justin Hite, junior journalism and corporate communications major at Elon University in Elon, N.C., where he is managing editor of the university’s student newspaper and is a sports reporter for the local daily newspaper. He is from Herndon, Va.
Ciara O’Rourke, senior journalism and French student at Western Washington University in Bellingham, where she has been managing editor of a university magazine and managing editor of the school newspaper. O’Rourke will be an intern this summer at Seattle Metropolitan magazine. She is from Bellevue, Wash.
Garesia Randle, junior journalism major at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, where she writes for the school newspaper. Randle will participate in the Scripps Howard Foundation’s Semester in Washington program this summer. She is from Houston, Texas.
Sean Rose, junior journalism and English major at the University of Kentucky, where he will be managing editor of the independent daily student newspaper this fall. Rose has interned at the Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader. He is from Crestwood, Ky.
Darla Slipke, junior journalism major from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, where she has served on the school’s daily newspaper staff as a reporter and campus editor. She is from Bristol, Conn.
Peter Stevenson, sophomore political science major at Indiana University in Bloomington, where he is city and state editor of the Indiana Daily Student. Stevenson has had internships with CBS News and The New York Times. He is from Chevy Chase, Md.
