Foundation
announces winners
of "Top Ten" scholarships
CINCINNATI -- The
Scripps Howard Foundation today awarded $100,000 in the
inaugural round of the foundation's new "Top Ten" scholarship
program for college journalists.
Ten journalism
students from across the United States each will receive
$10,000 scholarships this fall. The scholarships are one-time
awards, covering a full academic year.
"These 10
exceptional scholars carry with them the promise of a bright
future for American journalism," said Judith G. Clabes,
president and CEO of the foundation. "Their academic
excellence, dedication and hard work makes them deserving
recipients of these scholarships. The Scripps Howard
Foundation takes great pride in being able to help them
advance their careers."
This year's winners
were selected from among 31 nominees, based on academic
achievement and a demonstrated interest in a career in
journalism. They also were required to submit a personal essay
emphasizing long-term goals. A special scholarship committee
of the foundation, made up of industry professionals and
foundation trustees, selected the winners.
The "Top Ten" scholarships will be offered annually to
full-time students entering their junior or senior year. To
qualify, students must be enrolled for the full academic year
