1981 April Scripps purchases two Portland, Ore., radio stations, KUPL-AM/FM
     
  April 28 Scripps's first experiment with electronic distribution took place in Evansville, when news briefs from The Press could be seen in 30,000 homes via cable television.
     
  Sept. 9 Scripps Cable Service buys cable systems serving 12,500 subscribers in Lake County, Fla.
     
1982 February Purchased Jupiter (Fla.) Courier-Journal, which publishes three times weekly and has paid circulation of 6,000
     
  June 2 United Press International sold to Media News Corp.
     
1983 Feb. 16 The E. W. Scripps Company and Tele-Communications Inc. (TCI) form a joint venture for the purpose of acquiring, operating and developing cable television systems
     
  July Scripps Newspapers contracts with Knight-Ridder to bring its Viewtron videotex service to Denver, Pittsburgh and Memphis, where the company publishes newspapers. Viewtron provides information and services via telephone lines.
     
  Sept. 28 Scripps purchases twice-weekly newspaper, The Destin Log, which has a paid circulation of 6,300 in Florida's panhandle.
     
  Oct. 28 The Memphis Press-Scimitar is closed.
     
1984 Jan. 1 Cordovan Business Journals changes name to Scripps Howard Business Journals; there are 12 journals in the group.
     
  Jan. 6 Scripps purchases weekly newspapers in Kentucky - The Pioneer News, circulation 6,000; The Mt. Washington Star, circulation 2,000.
     
  March 1 The Stuart News becomes a morning publication and adds a Sunday edition.
     
  May 22 Ground is broken for E. W. Scripps Hall at Ohio University.
     
1985 March KNXV-TV in Phoenix acquired.
     
  April Company introduces redesigned lighthouse logo and new identity program.
     
  July Lawrence A. Leser elected president and chief executive officer, succeeding Edward W. Estlow.
     
  September Scripps Broadcasting celebrates 50th anniversary with New York City extravaganza.
     
  Nov. 1 Company acquires Kartes Video, nation's leading video cassette distribution company.

1986 January Scripps sells Ann Arbor Cablevision.

1988 June 28 The E. W. Scripps Company makes its initial stock offering .
     
1989 March Hollywood (Fla.) Sun-Tattler sold
     
  Fall The E. W. Scripps Company purchases stock in John P. Scripps Newspaper Group for $39.6 million from estate of John P. Scripps.
     
1990 March 7 Class A Common Stock now traded on the New York Stock Exchange under symbol "SSP."
     
  April 2 Lawsuit against the company by Gillett Broadcasting settled; provides for company to purchase WMAR-TV in Baltimore for $125 million .
     
  June 8 Steps taken to dissolve joint operating agreement with Persis Corporation, publisher of The Knoxville Journal, effective Dec.
     
  Dec. 31 Persis closes Knoxville Journal in exchange for $40 million in lieu of distributions it would have received from company had joint operations continued through 2005.
