The
Camera has one of the publishing industry's
more unusual names thanks to Frederick P. Johnson
and Bert Ball, who founded the weekly Boulder
Camera in 1890. They wanted to publish a newspaper
that had more illustrations than most during
that period, and planned to use engravings
to produce pictures and drawings. Their newspaper
was so successful as a weekly, they made it
a morning daily on St. Patrick's Day in 1891.
Over the years, the newspaper changed hands
several times. In 1969, it became a Ridder
publication, and in 1974 a Knight-Ridder publication,
reflecting the merger of the two media companies.
The Camera remained a Knight-Ridder newspaper
until it was acquired by Scripps in 1997.
