Bearing
one of the more unusual names in the
newspaper industry, The Gleaner is
the daily paper in Henderson, Ky.,
an agricultural and manufacturing center
in western Kentucky. Perched well above
the Ohio River, Henderson was one of
the few cities along the river to escape
the devastation of the great Flood
of 1937; it was longtime Gleaner Publisher
Leigh Harris who coined the phrase, "Henderson:
On the river, but never in it." With
a circulation of 10,700 Tuesday through
Saturday and 11,600 on Sunday, The
Gleaner is recognized as the finest
small daily in Kentucky, consistently
winning the Kentucky Press Association's
annual General Excellence awards for
both editorial and advertising quality
in its class. Today it operates as
a division of The Evansville Courier & Press,
located across the river in Indiana. |
