The Record Searchlight offers a balance of news that emphasizes local issues. It pays special attention to public spending and to growth and development, and it editorially crusades for open government and literacy. It has spearheaded campaigns to raise significant aid for earthquake and firestorm victims. Every year the Record Searchlight sponsors dozens of events and activities in the community, including the regional spelling bee. It regularly wins newswriting and photography awards from state and national organizations. Historically, its efforts have produced a long list of achievements: a countywide library system, an annexation program for Redding, a county health department and construction of a civic auditorium, and further back, it helped establish a municipal government and rid the community of widespread gambling and prostitution. The Record Searchlight is committed to community service and its readership.
