Scripps Revenues Rose 10.6 Percent in May

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The E.W. Scripps Company said today that its consolidated revenues rose 10.6 percent in May to $105.5 million, compared to $95.4 million in May 1996.Newspaper advertising revenues for the month were $45.1 million, up 8 percent, and total newspaper revenues moved up 8.4 percent to $61.5 million.Revenues from the television station group increased 1.8 percent to $30.7 million. In the entertainment division, revenues rose 57 percent to $13.2 million from $8.4 million last year, due to strong growth in all the division’s businesses.The E.W. Scripps Company operates nine television stations; daily newspapers in 16 markets; United Media, a worldwide syndicator and licenser of news features and comics; Scripps Howard Productions, a producer of television programming; Cinetel Productions, a leading producer of programs for the cable networks; and Home & Garden Television, a 24-hour cable network. On May 19, 1997, the company announced an agreement to acquire the five daily newspapers, one television station and one radio station operated by Harte-Hanks Communications.
