July revenues rise 7.6 percent

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The E. W. Scripps Company’s consolidated revenues rose 7.6 percent in July to $90.1 million, compared to $83.8 million in July 1996.Newspaper advertising revenue increased 9.2 percent to $40.5 million and total newspaper revenues moved up 9 percent to $56.5 million.Revenues from the television station group increased 0.5 percent to $23.1 million. The year-ago month included $900,000 in political advertising versus $0 this year.Entertainment division revenues moved up 17.1 percent to $10.4 million thanks to progress in all of the division’s businesses.The E. W. Scripps Company operates nine television stations; daily newspapers in 16 markets; United Media, a worldwide syndicator and licensor of news features and comics; two television production companies, Scripps Howard Productions and Cinetel Productions; and the Home & Garden Television network. Scripps has announced an agreement to acquire the daily newspapers, the television station and radio station now operated by Harte-Hanks Communications.
