Scripps Howard Foundation awards $319,000 in scholarships, internships

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Scripps Howard Foundation today announced it has awarded $319,000 in undergraduate scholarships and internships to 110 print and broadcast journalism students for the 1998-99 academic year.”Scripps Howard Foundation has a long history of support for aspiring young journalists,” said Judith G. Clabes, president and chief executive officer of the Foundation. “We’re pleased to provide opportunities for practical work experience as well as scholarship support for promising students. We consider it an investment in the future of journalism.”Of the 110 students selected, 35 will be participating in the Foundation’s successful internship program, launched in 1997. The Foundation this year has dedicated $122,500 to the program.Scripps Howard interns receive on-the-job, professional experience working for newspapers, magazines, broadcast television stations and other media businesses throughout the United States. Each intern receives a $2,500 grant and becomes eligible for an additional $1,000 when they have successfully completed the internship.The number of colleges and universities participating in the program has grown from four during the 1997-98 academic year to 17 for the 1998-99 academic year.Separate from the internship program, the Foundation has awarded $196,500 in academic scholarships to 75 full-time, undergraduate students. The scholarships range from $1,000 to $3,000 each.Dedicated to excellence in journalism, the Scripps Howard Foundation is a leader in industry efforts in journalism education, scholarships, internships, literacy, minority recruitment/development and First Amendment causes.
