Scripps January revenues increase 10 percent

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The E.W. Scripps Company’s consolidated revenues increased 10 percent in January to $119 million, compared to $108 million in January 1998.For comparative purposes, the company’s monthly revenue report excludes divested operations.Newspaper advertising moved up 14 percent to $56 million, boosted by an additional Sunday in the month. Classified advertising revenues increased 13 percent to $22.9 million. Local advertising revenues increased 12 percent to $22.8 million. Total newspaper revenues were up 8 percent to $73.4 million.Broadcast television revenues decreased 4.8 percent to $22.9 million. Advance advertising sales for February and March are flat to slightly above last year. Category television revenues increased 52 percent to $14.6 million. The number of subscribers at Home & Garden Television reached 50.5 million in January, up2 million from the previous month, according to the Nielsen Homevideo Index. The number of Food Network subscribers reached 37.7 million in January, up 600,000 from the previous month, according to the Nielsen index.The E.W. Scripps Company operates 19 daily newspapers; nine network-affiliated television stations; two TV networks, Home & Garden Television and the Food Network; a TV programmer, Scripps Productions; independent Yellow Pages directories; Scripps Howard News Service; and United Media, a worldwide syndicator and licensor of news features and comics.
