Scripps May revenues increase 5.9 percent

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The E.W. Scripps Company’s consolidated revenues increased 5.9 percent in May to $136 million, compared to $129 million in May 1998.For comparative purposes, the company’s monthly revenue report excludes divested operations.Newspaper advertising moved up 6.7 percent to $62.5 million. Classified advertising revenues increased 5.4 percent to $26.2 million. Local advertising revenues increased 2.4 percent to $23.8 million. Total newspaper revenues were up 3.3 percent to $80.2 million.Broadcast television revenues decreased 9.3 percent to $28.5 million. Revenues were softer than anticipated a month ago. Based on advance advertising sales, June revenues are expected to decrease about 9 percent year-over-year.Category television revenues increased 68 percent to $20.7 million. The number of subscribers at Home & Garden Television reached 54.6 million in May, up 2.1 million from the previous month, according to the Nielsen Homevideo Index. The number of Food Network subscribers reached 40.3 million in May, up 600,000 from the previous month, according to the Nielsen index.The E.W. Scripps Company operates 19 daily newspapers; nine network-affiliated television stations; two TV networks, Home & Garden Television and the Food Network; a TV programmer, Scripps Productions; independent Yellow Pages directories; Scripps Howard News Service; and United Media, a worldwide syndicator and licensor of news features and comics.
