Scripps July revenues increase 8.4 percent

CINCINNATI – The E.W. Scripps Company’s consolidated revenues increased 8.4 percent in July to $116 million, compared to $107 million in July 1998.For comparative purposes, the company’s monthly revenue report excludes divested operations.Newspaper advertising revenues moved up 10 percent to $54.9 million. Classified advertising revenues increased 14 percent to $24.2 million. Local advertising revenues increased 6.6 percent to $21 million. Total newspaper revenues were up 6.8 percent to $71.9 million.Broadcast television revenues decreased 6.6 percent to $20.8 million. However, advanced advertising sales for August and September suggest that television revenues for the quarter will be close to even with last year.Category television revenues increased 47 percent to $16.5 million. The number of subscribers at Home & Garden Television reached 56.1 million in July, up 900,000 from the previous month, according to the Nielsen Homevideo Index. The number of Food Network subscribers reached 41.2 million in July, up 400,000 from the previous month, according to the Nielsen index.The E.W. Scripps Company operates 19 daily newspapers; nine network-affiliated television stations; two TV networks, Home & Garden Television and the Food Network; a TV programmer, Scripps Productions; United Media, a worldwide syndicator and licensor of news features and comics; the Scripps Howard News Service; and publishes independent Yellow Pages directories. Scripps also operates 31 revenue-producing web sites, including hgtv.com, foodtv.com and comics.com.
