August revenues increase 11.7 percent

CINCINNATI – The E.W. Scripps Company’s consolidated revenues increased 11.7 percent in August to $131 million, compared to $117 million in August 1998.For comparative purposes, the company’s monthly revenue report excludes divested operations.Newspaper advertising revenues moved up 6.7 percent to $60.5 million. Classified advertising revenues increased 6.2 percent to $26.1 million. Local advertising revenues increased 4 percent to $21.9 million. Total newspaper revenues were up 3.8 percent to $77.6 million.Broadcast television revenues increased 6.1 percent to $24 million. Advanced advertising sales for September suggest that broadcast television revenues for the quarter will be close to even with last year.Category television revenues increased 57.1 percent to $18.6 million. The number of subscribers at Home & Garden Television reached 57.6 million in August, up 1.5 million from the previous month, according to the Nielsen Homevideo Index. The number of Food Network subscribers reached 41.9 million in August, up 700,000 from the previous month, according to the Nielsen index.The E.W. Scripps Company operates 19 daily newspapers; nine network-affiliated television stations; two TV networks, Home & Garden Television and the Food Network; a TV programmer, Scripps Productions; United Media, a worldwide syndicator and licensor of news features and comics; the Scripps Howard News Service; and publishes independent Yellow Pages directories. Scripps also operates 31 revenue-producing Web sites, including hgtv.com, foodtv.com and comics.com.
