Scripps January revenues increase 7.9 percent

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The E.W. Scripps Company’s consolidated revenues increased 7.9 percent in January to $130 million, compared to $120 million in January 1999.Newspaper advertising increased 4 percent to $58.1 million. Classified advertising revenues increased 7.9 percent to $24.9 million. Local advertising revenues declined 2.7 percent to $21.8 million. Total newspaper revenues were up 1.2 percent to $75.2 million.Broadcast television revenues increased 6.6 percent to $24.4 million. Category television revenues increased 50 percent to $21.9 million. The number of subscribers at Home & Garden Television reached 59.7 million in January, up 600,000 from the previous month, according to the Nielsen Homevideo Index. The number of Food Network subscribers reached 45.1 million in January, up 900,000 from the previous month, according to the Nielsen index.The E.W. Scripps Company operates 19 daily newspapers; nine network-affiliated television stations; three TV networks, Home & Garden Television, the Food Network and Do It Yourself; and a TV programmer, Scripps Productions. The company also operates United Media, a worldwide syndicator and licensor of news features and comics; the Scripps Howard News Service; and publishes independent Yellow Pages directories. Scripps operates 31 revenue-producing Web sites, including hgtv.com, foodtv.com, diynet.com and comics.com.
