Feb. 11, 2000

CINCINNATI – Scripps Howard Foundation, in partnership with College Media Advisers Inc., is sponsoring its first competition to identify the “Most Valuable Staffer” of U.S. college broadcast stations.Five winners will be selected, each receiving a $5,000 scholarship. Winners also will receive an all expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., for an awards presentation Nov. 11 during the National College Media Convention, co-sponsored by the Associated Collegiate Press and College Media Advisers. The broadcast stations where the students work will each receive a matching $5,000 grant.“Our intention in initiating this competition is to recognize the unsung accomplishments of students who make campus broadcast stations tick,” said Judith G. Clabes, president and CEO of the Scripps Howard Foundation. “Whether they’re on-air personalities, or working behind the scenes, we know there are student broadcasters out there who are worthy of this award.”Chris Carroll, president of College Media Advisers and media adviser at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, said, “This competition is patterned after a similar award created last year for college newspaper staffers. The interest and excitement generated by that awards competition made it clear to the Scripps Howard Foundation and College Media Advisers that a similar program was needed for student broadcast journalists.”Winners will be chosen by a three-judge panel, including a representative from College Media Advisers, the foundation and a professional at-large.The competition is open to any member of student-operated college radio or television stations licensed for broadcast by the Federal Communications Commission or available campus- or community-wide via a closed circuit system. The nominee must be a full-time freshman, sophomore or junior in good standing. Nominees do not have to be journalism or communications majors.
